Japan E. coli O111 Outbreak
The low-priced Korean-style barbecue chain, Yakiniku-zakaya Ebisu, was identified as the source of an E. coli O111 outbreak among Japanese residents in mid-April 2011. At least 90 people became ill with E. coli O111 infections during the outbreak and four people died after consuming Yukhoe, a raw beef dish that is similar to steak tartare.In May, Foods Forus Co., the managing company of the Yakiniku-zakaya Ebisu restaurant chain, admitted it had not tested its raw meat for pathogens for the past two years.
